F) More than eighty-three years ago, farmers from the rural areas of Indiana created a legacy, a legacy that remains a thriving industry today… the Rural Electric Cooperatives. With the help of the Rural Electrification Act, these not-for-profit organizations were brought together by the very farmers and ranchers who had never experienced the benefits of having electricity in their own homes. Electricity brought huge benefit to the American farmer; through Johnson County REMC, an Electric Cooperative, the local farmers not only had electricity in their homes, but they shared decision making responsibility and established an ownership share in the cooperative. It created change and progress.
