Glenn W. Oyler Memorial Technical Scholarship

Introduction

Dr. Glenn Oyler entered the welding field as a combination welder when he was 17 years old in 1941 at Fairchild Aircraft Corporation in Hagerstown, Maryland. He served three years in World War II as a welder for the 8th Air Force in England. He received a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in metallurgy, with a minor in welding engineering. He received the patent for Plasma Arc Cutting and published the first paper on "CO2 Shielding for the Welding of Steel". He worked as a welding engineer and in management for various early space programs, the nuclear submarine program, the atomic bomb program, and the space shuttle program.

He was an AWS District Director, a Director-at-Large, Technical Director at the AWS Headquarters, and President of the Welding Research Council. He received the honor of Fellow in 1981 from the American Welding Society for Metals, and Counselor in 2009 from the American Welding Society.

Purpose

Awarded to a student learning to become a welder at a community college or technical institute.

Eligibility

The Glenn W. Oyler Memorial Technical Scholarship will be awarded to provide financial assistance to students in a community college or technical institute.

A) Applicant must be a minimum of eighteen years of age.

B) Applicant must have a minimum high school diploma.

C) Applicant must have a 2.5 overall grade point average.

D) Applicant must provide a letter of reference indicating how they will use their welding education.

E) Applicant must be attending a certificate or degree granting course of study in welding.

F) Student may be enrolled full time or part time.

G) Proof of financial need is required to qualify.

H) Applicant must submit all required application information.

I) Applicant must be a citizen of the United States and plan to attend an academic institution located within New Mexico or Pennsylvania.

J) Applicants may reapply; however, persons who have received this award may reapply and may be granted the award for a maximum of 2 years.
