Dr. Donald Suggs Scholarship

The Dr. Donald M. Suggs Scholarship is designed to enhance recruitment and retention of academically talented undergraduate students from ethnic groups that are typically under-represented in higher education. This scholarship is named to honor Dr. Donald M. Suggs, newspaper publisher, retired oral surgeon, patron of the arts and distinguished community leader. His contributions to the City of St. Louis and the State of Missouri are recognized and honored by the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Minimum qualifications

A) Composite ACT score of 27 or higher or an SAT score of 1260 or higher for the new exam

B) U.S. citizen or permanent resident

C) Enrollment at MU the first semester after high school graduation

D) Membership in a racial or ethnic minority group that is under-represented in relation to the University's goal to achieve educational benefits of a diverse student body.

E) First preference shall be given to students who are residents of the greater St. Louis, Missouri metropolitan area.

Award amount

A) Missouri resident: $15,000 per year 

B) Non-Missouri resident: Nonresidents also receive a waiver of nonresident tuition (approximately $15,838). Waiver of nonresident tuition is for a total of 8 regular semesters (fall and spring), students are not eligible for the waiver during summer terms. (Will be canceled or reduced if nonresident tuition is waived or paid by another source.)

C) An additional amount of up to $7,000 for a study abroad experience also is included

D) $2,000 stipend for freshman year participation in MU Discovery Fellows Research Program

E) Recipients of the Dr. Donald Suggs Scholarship are eligible to receive the Bright Flight Scholarship. The Dr. Donald Suggs Scholarship cannot be combined with certain general University scholarships such as the Curator's Scholar Award, Excellence Award, Chancellor's Award, George C. Brooks Scholarship, Diversity Award, Mizzou Scholars Award, Mark Twain Nonresident Scholarship, Black and Gold Scholarships, Border State Scholars, and the Brazeal Honors College Endowed Diversity Scholarship. The Dr. Donald M. Suggs Scholarship may be reduced if all federal, state, institutional and private aid received by the student exceeds the cost of attendance as defined by the MU Student Financial Aid Office.
