Campus: Facilities, Residence and Location

Northern Lakes has two main libraries located in Grouard and Slave Lake, and offers digital resources, such as Databases, e-books, and videostreaming services. Its core collections include paperbacks, tradebooks, CD-ROM, videos, periodicals, and references. The Native Cultural Arts Museum is a part of the College and focuses on the people of Woodland Cree and Metis of northern Alberta. It also has living history exhibits inside the Grouard Historical Village that showcase local Aboriginal history.

The College also offers students housing accommodation, which is available at the Northern Lakes College Grouard Campus. It offers dorm rooms, townhouses, and houses for single students and students with family. Student Family Housing can accommodate 18 single families. It has three and four bedroom in unfurnished houses, town houses, and duplex units. It also has two furnished units for people with disabilities. The Police Point furnished townhouses include three and four bedroom units; Mission Street has unfurnished houses (two three bedrooms) with fridge and stove and also 2-bedroom units that come with fridges. Moosehorn Lodge is a co-ed campus residence at the Grouard Campus. It has furnished rooms that provide students sleeping and study quarters. It also has a student lounge that offers reading materials, television, and billiards. Dorm rooms are available for rental, weekly, or daily accommodation.

Student Services and Student Life

The College offers students Counselling Services, Recreation Services, Scholarships and Awards, Student’s Association, College Clothing and Merchandise, Educational Financing, and other services.

Every registered student of Northern Lakes College is a member of the Students’ Association, and they are embodied by their respective representatives whose primary job is to act as a liaison between the students, the Community Education Committee and the Student Council.

Northern Lakes College offers recreational services to students and staff. It also offers health and wellness activities, intramural programs and opportunities to compete in sports. Recreation Services at the Slave Lake Campus offers indoor swimming pool and water slide, gymnasium, climbing wall, ball diamond, and soccer fields. Other recreational activities include Floor Hockey, Aerobics, Badminton, Wall Climbing, Swimming, Archery, Cross-Country Skiing, Camping, Canoeing, and Wall Climbing.

Academic Programs

Some of the Academic Programs of the College are: Teaching, Social Work, Rehabilitation Therapy, Production Field Operations, Practical Nurse, Power Engineering, Petroleum, Office Administration, Health Care, Forestry, Emergency Medical Responder, Community Liaison, and Business Administration.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

The College offers Scholarships, Bursaries, and Prizes, like Students’ Association Award, Louise McKinney Post-Secondary Scholarship, Students’ Association Role Model Scholarship, Doreen Bellerose Memorial Award, Chairman’s Scholarship, and Adult High School Equivalency Scholarship.

Slave Lake Information

Grouard is in Alberta's census divions #17 in northwestern Alberta. The largest population centre is the town of Slave Lake. Slave Lake is characterized by many as "The Jewel of the North", and lies at the eastern end of Lesser Slave Lake, just 5 ½ hours South West of Fort McMurray. Slave Lake is a progressive, dynamic community, with our crisp blue lake, white sandy beaches, blazing sunsets, lush green forests, spectacular native flora and a variety of wildlife that provides an unsurpassed natural beauty for all to enjoy.

Slave Lake offers year round activities for sightseers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The summer months bring Riverboat Daze, the Alberta Open Sandsculpture Championships, Lesser Slave Lake Song Bird Festival and annual fishing Tournaments. Incredible cross-country skiing, ice fishing and backcountry sledding attract many to the area in the winter months.
